Transforming the Malabar Region

The project site is on the south of the mouth of Valapattanam river, 12km from Kannur city centre. Located 275 km from Kochi and 145 km from Mangalore, the Malabar International Port aims to enhance the Malabar region's logistic and economic landscape. West of the riverine Azhikkal port, our Greenfield project is designed to create cargo connectivity, port infrastructure, and Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and industrial parks.

To develop to global standards, the maritime, logistical and industrial infrastructure of the North Malabar region, facilitating economic development and employment.


Mission

To facilitate the planning, investment and growth of an international as well as coastal shipping seaport with inter-modal connectivity at Azhikkal, along with SEZs/ industrial parks that can funnel cargo to the port and entrepreneurial resources into potential sectors in the Malabar region with comparative advantage and high prospects for success.

Objectives

  • To complete in four years (2026-2031) the basic investments like breakwater construction, dredging and roads by the MIPS Ltd. / Government of Kerala as well as the land acquisition for the port, connectivity and the SEZs/parks - singly and with other developmental agencies.
  • Parallelly, to select private partner(s)/EPC contractor(s) of international standards for the commercial development of the port and related infrastructures under Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode or otherwise.
  • To achieve the financial closure of the Project.
  • To commence in 2026-27 and complete the construction of the breakwaters, port, NH extension and supporting facilities by 2031.
  • To commission by 2031 the Phase 1 port facilities of the international port with the breakwaters and the related facilities as well as Special Economic Zones / industrial parks particularly focused on port-dependent industries and businesses.

A Strategic Hub for Global Commerce in Malabar Region

Draft

Dredge depth of over 14 metres, to handle Panamax size container vessels (up to 5,000 TEUs) and ships up to 75,000 DW.

Multi-Cargo Handling

Equipped to handle containers, liquid bulk (including petroleum products), dry bulk, and break-bulk cargoes.

Strategic Land Use

Initial development utilizes 60 hectares of Government land. Expansion through land acquisition and reclamation for future port and connectivity infrastructure.

Catalyst for Regional Growth

The port, along with planned SEZS and industrial/ logistics parks, is set to drive substantial industrialization, economic development and employment across the Malabar region.

Total project cost: ₹5,047 crores (€488 million); to be implemented in 3 phases:Phase 1: ₹3,742 Cr (€362 million), Phase 2: *375 Cr (€36 million), Phase 3: ₹930 Cr (€90 million) for the port alone (excluding port-based SEZs and industrial/logistics parks)
